Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a controversial and environmentally damaging method of mining for natural gas, explored in the Academy Award nominated documentary Gasland (2010). Promised Land, picks on this highly lucrative business and tells, in a very gentle way, a fictional story of how two resource industry sales people, played by Matt Damon and Frances McDormand, go about tying to convince a small town to lease their land for exploitation.
With Rosemarie DeWitt and Hal Holbrook town residents and John Krasinski as a disruptive environmentalist, Promised Land manages some good moments. The film was directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Damon and Kransinski (based on a story by Dave Eggers). A slow paced, thoughtful, but slightly worthy introduction for those unfamiliar with the implications of fracking.
