Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play real life supernatural detectives Ed and Lorraine Warren in this straight up old school possession horror film. Director James Wan weaves a familiar yet well told tale of a beautiful young family who move into a charming but malevolently possessed old New England home.
With solid performances all around (including Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston as the unfortunate homeowners), The Conjuring is a creepy and at times downright scary quasi-theological ride. The lack of cruelty is refreshing and in a way, makes the film even more compelling. May well turn out to be many people’s favourite horror film of the year.
