Pasolini’s films are challenging but I like to challenge myself from time to time, and his body of work has become one of my go-to selections when I’m looking to push myself outside of my comfort zone. That said, his adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales is probably the most fun and unreservedly entertaining of his films I have seen to-date. Perhaps it is because of the many British associations, from the source material – with which I was somewhat familiar – to the many British actors on screen, and perhaps also the optional English audio track, but this film is hugely entertaining. As with most of his oeuvre, the film is packed full of nudity, sex, toliet humour, strikng imagery and abstract profundity, strange looking non-professional actors share the screen with numerous veteran thesps, and Pasolini even casts himself as Chaucer. This one was fun.
