As I lamented on a recent podcast, Woody Allen’s latest film Blue Jasmine does not yet have a release date for Japan. So, as a way to console myself, I decided to sit down with Robert B. Weide’s excellent Woody Allen: A Documentary.
Covering the full span of Allen’s career, from his beginnings as a teenage joke writer, through to recent renaissance with films like Midnight in Paris, this documentary covers all Allen’s films, introduces us to most of his collaborators and gives us plenty of time with the man himself.
This is delightful and revealing look at one of the best and most prolific film directors of all time. We get a deep sense of what motivates Allen, how he works and why he has chosen to make films at an unrelenting pace. Essential viewing for fans of Allen and to be honest, anyone interested in the creative side of film-making.
