Rock Hudson stars as Tony Wilson, the newly rejuvenated version of tired businessman Arthur Hamilton, who enlisted the services of a secret organisation to give him a “second chance” at life. No sooner did he make the decision, however, “the company” becomes increasingly manipulative and controlling, while Tony finds his new life, friends, home and body as ungratifying and unfulfilling as his old life. Shot in stark black and white, Frankenheimer creates a surreal paranoid nightmare that is as much a pre-Cronenberg body horror pic as it is a “Big Brother” conspiracy thriller at the height of national distrust in the USA.
