British filmaker and self-confessed Stone Roses fan Shane Meadows chronicles the legendary Manchester band’s brief and heated comeback in fine style in this passionate documentary. Meadows takes the time to go back to the band’s origins, the release of their seminal debut album, before delving into their subsequent woes with their record label that left them in limbo for years, the cool reception to Second Coming and then the break-ups. Certainly a one-sided hagiography from someone who feels so passionately about the band he refuses to pry where other more journalistic documentarians would have felt compelled to snoop, but still a delight for fans of the band, and gorgeously photographed by Laurie Rose – particularly their fantastic farewell gig at Heaton Park in 2012.
