There is a lot of love out there for Maurice Pialat’s 1991 biopic, detailing the final weeks in the life of the famous Dutch master. While the cinematography constantly evokes the painter’s work, I found the film an interminable bore. Jacques Dutronc’s performance is committed, yet unlikable, and the pacing does its best to challenge our attention and interest for all of the film’s 158 minutes. Languid, vague and despondent.
