Excellent psycho-drama pitting James Fox’s young toff against Dirk Bogarde’s working class manservant. Tony (Fox) moves into a new London townhouse, and employs Barrett (Bogarde) to tend to his affairs. Slowly Barrett begins to manipulate Tony’s dependancy on him until eventually the roles have been reversed and Tony is now wholly subserviant to Barrett. Wendy Craig and Vera Miles play the respective love interests, but the men are the real stars here, together with Pinter’s brilliant screenplay, adapted from the novel by Robin Maugham.
